Amilia is 1-month old as of yesterday (March 25). Time is going by so fast. She is starting to react to sound and focusing on different objects for a short period. She still has "crazy arms" where she can't quite move them into place, but you can certainly see the progress. She is now about 7 pounds 10 ounces. We are getting down a routine now, because she wakes up every three hours. Mommy takes the night shift at 3 a.m. to feed and daddy takes the early morning shift at 6 a.m. This helps us get ready for when daddy goes back to work, so he can sleep at night. At this point, the only thing Amilia has that makes her uncomfortable is gas pains. We are helping her with tummy massages and gas relief medication for infants. It seems to be helping. She's been a good baby and we are grateful she is healthy and doing well. We see the doctor on Monday for the official check up. Tomorrow is Easter, so we'll leave you with this... Tomorro...
Romeo left us suddenly this morning to go on and reunite with his best friend Aries and our son Adam. This morning started like any other morning. Amilia wakes up ready to eat, Romeo is "silent" barking in the front room because he needs to be expressed, is hungry, and wants to change the scenery (or switch sides he was laying on.) We ask each other who wants to take care of Amilia and who wants to take care of Romeo. Today it was mommy's turn to take care of Romeo, so daddy changed and fed Amilia. As Romeo was eating in his cart in the front room, Amilia was getting a bottle and a new diaper in the bedroom. Just a normal morning. When Romeo is done eating he gets put back in to bed on the opposite side he was laying on. Mommy always makes sure his head is comfortable, so his neck doesn't get stiff. But today was different. Amilia is 3 weeks old already! Today is also the date she was supposed to be due. We decided awhile back with the suggestion of the doctor to have her 3 weeks early to avoid any complications the longer we wait. The good thing is she is healthy and doing well. She is doing "tummy time" everyday and everyday we see her getting stronger. We also talk to her and read to her. Even though she doesn't understand, she is hopefully hearing the tones in our voices as we read to her so she can develop her speaking skills in English (and Hungarian). She is starting to get on a schedule, sleeping for about 3 1/2 hours at a time. Hopefully that will increase so we can get a decent amount of sleep. Regardless of the lack of sleep, we love her and we are very happy she is healthy and developing well. We look forward to the two month mark when she gets all of her vaccinations and we can start taking her to more places.
Amilia is celebrating the next step in the right direction for captive animals. Today she celebrates with us that Sea World will no longer breed orcas. We started reading books to Amilia a few days ago because we want to give her a head start and best chance of success as she grows. Besides there is only so much you can say to a newborn before you run out of things to talk about :) We try to read to her when she is awake and engaged. It seems to get a response even at this point in her life when she can't focus on one thing for too long. Besides it being a fulfilling experience as a parent to know you are doing what you can to help her develop, it's also beneficial in many ways. I'm sure if you haven't seen the commercials on T.V. or heard them on the radio, First 5 California has been advertising a lot about the benefits. Here's just a few: Builds a baby's language awareness, listening, and memory skills. Introduces concepts such as stories, letters, colors, and shapes in a fun way. Amilia had her second check up today. She is now past her birth weight (6 pounds, 13 ounces) and is a healthy 7 pounds, 0.9 ounces. They also measured her head circumference, listened to her heart and lungs, checked her eyes, her hips, and addressed the questions we had. We were slightly concerned that she didn't sleep much last night and seemed uncomfortable. We suspected it might be gas. Which it turned out it probably was. So we learned what we have to do and today she has been sleeping really well, even into the night. Our pediatrician told us at this point we can start giving her a pacifier if we needed to soothe her and since she feeds really well, we can start giving her mom's milk in a bottle once a day. This helps her get ready for when Mommy has to go back to work and we need someone else to feed her. So far she has had two baths, both times she didn't like them. Today, March 11, Amilia is already two weeks old! She also has her two week check up at the doctor's office. She is starting to move her head towards sounds and lights. She also is establishing her "feed me" routine. See the video below. We look forward to the time after she gets her vaccines so we can go out more with her and let her experience the world. We've been being very careful not to irritate Amilia's umbilical stump for the last week-and-a-half and have been keeping an eye on when it will finally fall off. Last night was that time. 10 days after she was born. We can now move from sponge baths to the real thing. No more umbilical stump - 3/7/2016 A little while after her stump fell off. Sleepy baby.
Today Amilia had her 1 week checkup and we finally met the pediatrician we chose before she was born. This was her third car ride and she seems to like them. After checking in and sitting in the waiting room, Amilia was a pretty good baby. Not too fussy. During her doctors appointment they got her vitals, measured her length, the circumference of her head, and gave her a complete check up from head to toe. The doctor said she is healthy and on track. We were told to start giving her vitamin D drops, which she said were a normal thing to start at this age. Other than that, the doctor said to keep feeding her when she wants, but make sure to feed at least every three hours and keep doing what were doing. We have a two week checkup next Friday to continue checking her progress into her life.
We decided to start a blog for our family and friends who are interested in knowing how our little Amilia is growing and experiencing her new life. We look forward to sharing her moments with all of you. As of this writing she is officially a week and 1 day old! Time is going by so fast already it seems. We will definitely cherish all that she has to give us. Which right now is a lot of diapers, sleeping, and feeding. Still, we will enjoy all of it. Thanks for reading and we hope you come back often.
